Encouraged by a teacher to Fight?

A dispute between two 8th grade students as reported by fox news, in Omaha, NE led to a school yard brawl encouraged by their teacher.  Patrick Kocsis the teacher involved has been suspended from the school and cited by police for taking two of his students outside and encouraging them to fight out their problems.

They say boys will be boys, and fighting with your fellow classmates has been one of the things that boys have always done. However I don't agree with them almost being forced to fight by a teacher. There are many other options open to them on how to fix a problem. So as I understand that fighting amongst your peers at that age is almost necessary to save face, I don't think that having a teacher tell you its what needs to be done, is the right way to handle it.

You read about it in books set back in the earlier years of our country, in movies that define the older eras of time. Boys fight but to have a teacher tell you that violence is the way you workout your problems is another story altogether. Teachers are supposed to be the ones that give you information on how to do things logically, if they can't find a way there are others to do the job. Even though they fought it out, the boys could not even remember what had started the fight in the first place. The mother of one of the boys said,"That's not what we teach children to resolve disputes." I agree that there are plenty of other ways to resolve issues when there is an adult to help, rather than just tell them to "slap it out".

This article was not about  fighting amongst children, it was about the influence of teachers on students when there is a dispute. This teacher was wrong, ethically speaking, if children want to fight they are going to fight, but there should be no encouragement from a teacher to fight out their differences.

  1. I definitely agree with you. Teachers should not encourage violence but have the children talk their problems out like adults. Teachers are supposed to be helping our children prepare for the world, not to be immature and physically act out every time things don't go the way they want them to. In my honest opinion that teacher should be fired if he/she wasn't already. That kind of behavior from teachers should not be tolerated by the school board.
