Were you born on 9/11? This little girl was, she was 10 when the towers were hit, lots of people where born on 9/11. Do they still celebrate it? Or do they see it as a tabu? People have a lot of different ways around celebrating birthdays and anniversary's on this day. They even have a website dedicated to finding out how people with this birthday celebrate it.
I was born on 9/11, I was 19 years old the day the towers were hit, yes it was a bad day for everyone. I felt the loss, but only on the level of there was so much to feel, the firefighters, people on the planes, people in the buildings, the family's of all of those people. It was too much for one person to feel all in one day, it was easier to focus on what affected me. It was my birthday a day to celebrate, let loose, and just have a good time with my family and friends. I was angry because it was easier for a selfish teenager to feel anger rather than sorrow on a traditionally happy day. I have grown up I still have the same feelings for all those people lost that day, and I still feel its my day to celebrate, I just have to incorporate that its a bad day for some and its a celebration for others. People have to decide for themselves what is right or wrong to do in this situation, I have chosen to have my birthday like nothing happened, others choose to ignore their birthday in light of the situation. I think it has to be a personal choice as to what you do on the day. I think proximity to the location of the tragedy has a lot to do with my decision and to others as well.
The article has helped me realize that I m not the only one in the situation of having to decide self or country, and that its O.K. if I want to have a party. However there might be some people who won't enjoy coming due to how that day affected them.
